What Is DHEA? DHEA, an abbreviation for dehydroepiandrosterone, is a steroid hormone produced by our body's adrenal glands. These glands are located just above our kidneys. It is also produced in the gonads as well as the brain. In our grey matter, it acts as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the sex steroids:  androgen and estrogen .
